The Whisper that Saved Me
It was early on a Saturday morning, and I woke with my mind already racing. I was the keynote speaker at a Men’s Wilderness Camp tucked away near the borders of Washington, Idaho, and Canada. The morning air was still dark, heavy with the smell of pine, but my thoughts were anything but still.
The camp organizer had asked me to add two more teaching sessions that morning. I wanted to say no I had a flight to catch out of Seattle later that day, back to the United Kingdom. According to the map, it was over 400 miles to SeaTac Airport, and the drive would take six to seven hours… if everything went perfectly.
But ministry rarely runs on “perfect” schedules. So I said yes.
That morning, my sessions flowed beautifully. I taught on the Spirit-filled life, reading from Galatians 5:25: “Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” (NLT)
I reminded the men that there is an immeasurable advantage when we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us. Of all the advisers in the universe, who could possibly outmatch the wisdom of the Creator of the universe? I encouraged them not just to hear His voice, but to lean in, listen carefully, and obey quickly.
Psalm 32:8 (TPT) says it beautifully: “I hear the Lord saying, I will stay close to you, instructing and guiding you along the pathway for your life. I will advise you along the way and lead you forth with my eyes as your guide.”
What I didn’t realize was that I would have my own test of obedience before the day was done.
By the time I finished the workshops, packed my luggage, and loaded the rental car, I was already behind schedule. I drove down the winding road out of the campgrounds and finally hit the main highway. Relieved, I pressed the gas a little harder I had a flight to catch.
That’s when I heard it in my heart: “Eddie, slow down.”
I brushed it off. I don’t have time to slow down, I reasoned.
A minute later, I heard it again. This time it wasn’t just a fleeting thought it was that familiar still, small voice I had come to recognize as the Holy Spirit. Yet again, I argued. “Lord, I stayed behind to minister. I’m serving You! I can’t be late for my flight now.”
But the voice wouldn’t leave me. A third time: “Eddie, slow down.”
Exasperated, I pushed back. “Lord, I’m a hundred miles from nowhere. I haven’t seen another car in ages. Why slow down now?”
Finally, more to silence the conviction than out of obedience, I eased my foot off the gas and returned to the speed limit. It felt like crawling after going 25 miles an hour over.
I hadn’t driven more than a minute or two at that speed when I rounded a bend and there he was. A State Patrol officer, parked behind a cluster of trees, radar gun ready. If I hadn’t slowed down, there would have been no avoiding a ticket. As I passed, I waved. He waved back.
In that moment, the lesson hit me: the Spirit wasn’t trying to restrict me He was trying to protect me.
I’ve thought about that moment many times. Was the Spirit warning me about a ticket? About safety? About my own impatience? Perhaps all three.
How often do we say after a mistake, “Something inside me knew… I should have listened”? That something is often the Holy Spirit, gently guiding us.
Galatians 5:16 (TPT) says: “As you yield freely and fully to the dynamic life and power of the Holy Spirit, you will abandon the cravings of your self-life.”
That word yield is key. To yield is to surrender control. To slow down. To let God lead. Without His guidance, I’m just stumbling forward, powered by ambition and deadlines. But with His guidance, even the detours become divine appointments.
When we follow the Spirit’s nudges—those whispers that say “slow down,” “call that person,” or “take this path instead” several things happen:
1. We gain clarity. The Spirit shows us what we couldn’t see on our own.
2. We find peace. Even when life feels chaotic, His presence brings calm.
3. We avoid regret. So many heartaches come from ignoring His voice.
4. We walk with confidence. Not stumbling blindly, but moving forward with the boldness of being guided by God Himself.
Isaiah 30:21 (NKJV) promises: “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.”
That Saturday, God reminded me of a truth I had just finished preaching: following the Spirit isn’t about perfection it’s about direction.
Friend, where in your life is God whispering, “Slow down”?
Is it in your schedule? Your relationships? Your ambitions?
Don’t ignore the nudge. The same Spirit who spared me from a ticket—and maybe even from danger—wants to guide you today.
Choose to yield. Choose to listen. Choose to follow. Because when you do, you’ll discover what Galatians 5:25 really means: “Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.”
