When Will Enough of Not Enough Be Enough?
The question every person eventually has to answer is this: When will enough of not enough finally be enough?
And here’s what I mean when will you reach the point where constant frustration, empty living, or cycles of defeat are no longer acceptable?
Some of us chase “more” in one area and ignore the famine in another. You might have plenty of money, a secure career, even a house that looks picture-perfect on the outside. But if your children are far from God, if your home is fractured by addiction, if your heart is heavy with anger, offense, or insecurity you’re still living a life of not enough.
I often hear people say, “But Pastor, you don’t know how bad my problems are.” And that may be true I don’t know every detail. But I do know this: you may not be able to change everything today, but you can change something.
It’s been said: You make your choices, and then your choices make you.
Scripture is blunt about this in Ezekiel 18:
“Put all your rebellion behind you, and get for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit… Turn back and live!” (vv. 31–32 NLT)
God is crystal clear:
• Put rebellion behind you.
• Get a new heart.
• Get a new spirit.
In other words make a choice. Change your life.
Not long ago, someone sat across from me, discouraged and broken. They said, “Pastor, I’m waiting on God. Waiting for Him to take away my addiction. Waiting for Him to fix my problems.”
I looked at them with compassion and said, “Stop waiting for God to do what He has already asked you to do.”
God’s power will meet you but He expects you to take the first step.
Ezekiel 18 says, “Make for yourself a new heart and spirit.” But in Ezekiel 36, God promises: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.”
Do you see it? You move first, and then God moves with transforming power.
Here’s the truth: You cannot do what God can do. And God will not do what you can do.
Paul says in Philippians 2: “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” That’s your responsibility.
But then he adds: “For it is God who works in you to will and to do for His good pleasure.” That’s God’s power.
• You say, “I don’t have the will.” He gives you the will.
• You say, “I don’t have the ability.” He gives you the ability.
You do your part, and God does His.
If you’re tired of not enough, here are three steps to breakthrough:
1. Desire – Change always begins with desire. But desire alone can be deceptive. The Bible warns about sinful desires (Romans 7:5), stubborn desires (Psalm 81:12), and itching desires for false teaching (2 Timothy 4:3).
The right prayer is David’s: “Examine me, Lord… test my desires and thoughts.” (Psalm 26:2 GNT)
God reshapes desires before He fulfills them.
2. Decision – Joel 3:14 describes “multitudes in the valley of decision.” Desire without decision is like a car stuck in neutral. Animals live by instinct but God made you in His image, with the ability to choose. Don’t stay paralyzed. Decide.
3. Discipline – Jesus said the wise man builds on the rock by hearing and obeying His words (Luke 6:46–49). Discipline is simply obedience in motion. It’s self-control, doing the things you don’t want to do so you can one day have the things you don’t have.
Desire sets direction.
Decision sets the course.
Discipline keeps you on it.
And together, they lead to… Delight!
“Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart’s desires.” (Psalm 37:4 NLT)
God reshapes your desires, strengthens your decisions, fuels your discipline and then fills your life with His delight.
So let me ask you again: When will enough of not enough finally be enough?
When will you stop circling in frustration and step toward transformation?
You don’t have to stay stuck. Desire what is right. Decide to follow through. Discipline yourself to obey. And then delight in the God who promises to give you a new heart, a new spirit, and a new future.
Enough is enough. It’s time for change.
